Students with an interest in Planning Essentials will be asked to complete a core set of courses which will provide them with a more thorough examination of specific branches of planning, including sustainable planning, transportation planning, and related disciplines pertaining to public engagement and economic development and investment.

Prerequisite(s):

No required prerequisite, but students should have Grade 12 English and Mathematics or equivalent

This course introduces the student to how accounting information is used by, and meets the needs of both internal and external users through effective and efficient communication as well as what accounting information is required by a business concern to reflect clearly the operating results of the enterprise over its operating life. Throughout the course, students will be introduced to generally accepted accounting principles, the interpretation and preparation of financial statements and how this information is recorded in the various business records.

Site Management and Building Safety
Availability
 

This course deals with the building envelope, its maintenance, and its relationship to indoor environmental conditions and energy efficiency concerns. Issues related to barrier free access, parking, and landscaping are examined. Environmental measures such as waste management, recycling and hazardous waste handling are discussed. Various health and safety issues, including security and emergency planning, are also included.

Strategic Financial Planning - Facilities

This course provides an overview of today's strategic and financial planning techniques for facility management. Budgeting, materials procurement and management, work order systems, work planning and scheduling, cost control concepts and techniques, and use of computers in facility management are some of the topics that are covered. A prime focus of this course is to raise the awareness of efficient energy and environmental management and to control such costs through effective planning and budgeting, and other financial techniques.

Human Relations For Facility Managers

This course provides an overview of human relations and personnel management for facility managers. Employee hiring and selection, training and development, performance review and evaluation, employee delegation and empowerment, disciplining and discharge, effective interpersonal skills, crisis and time management are some of the topics covered. Students also learn how to develop and implement a training and development program as well as a performance review/appraisal system.

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, the student will be able to:

  • Solve practical planning problems by interpreting data and generating recommendations and design strategies.
  • Apply working knowledge of sustainable planning approaches in addressing environmental, economic, and social issues.
  • Synthesize supporting data and information of an analysis of infrastructure investments for economics, sustainability, and mobility.
  • Evaluate environmental regulation, health, and the needs of unique and diverse populations in the analysis of urban growth and transportation needs.
  • Analyze transportation problems and propose solutions, including demand analysis framework, data collection procedures, travel demand modeling and forecasting, and cost-effectiveness evaluations for new initiatives.
  • Solve situational problems/simulations using forecasting, valuation, and demand analysis.
  • Evaluate and analyze the role of public consultation professionals and process stewards.
  • Apply principles and strategies to design, facilitate, and document credible engagement processes.
  • Support the public engagement process by employing key facilitative tools.
  • Evaluate the relationship between planning and economic development.
  • Solve situational problems using issues identification, visioning, option prioritization, and action planning.

Certificate of Completion

Upon successful completion of the program requirements, please submit a Request for Certificate of Completion Form to the Faculty of Continuing Education and Training. There is no cost for this and your Certificate of Completion will be sent to you electronically.
