The Seneca Experience
Why did you decide to enrol in this program at Seneca Polytechnic?
I chose the Accounting program at Seneca because of its strong reputation. One major advantage was the ability to transfer credits from Seneca directly to York University, allowing me to pursue a Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting. This pathway brought me one step closer to earning my Chartered Professional Accounting (CPA) designation. I wanted options that would support my long-term goals, and Seneca provided exactly that.
How would you describe your experience at Seneca? (Ex. The classes, professors, classmates, environment)
I really enjoyed my experience at Seneca. Even though I was an online student, I was able to create connections with my classmates during class time and beyond. Seneca also has some amazing professors, especially in the Accounting program. I found that they were always willing to help out and are very knowledgeable in the courses that they are teaching.
Going from Diploma to a Degree
What influenced your decision to continue your education after completing your diploma?
My career goal is to open my own accounting firm, which requires me to have a bachelor’s degree, two years of work experience, and pass the CPA exams. Completing my diploma fueled my ambition to keep going. Another major influence was my professors at Seneca. They are very knowledgeable, and they inspired me to deepen my knowledge and develop the ability to think critically and solve complex accounting problems.
How did your Seneca diploma program prepare you for your degree program?
My diploma helped me build a solid foundation not just in accounting, but also in other fields of business, like marketing. At university, I often find myself referencing the readings I did at Seneca. I also find myself returning to lectures I participated in at Seneca to draw on key learnings my professors taught me. Although some subjects are challenging, the foundation my Seneca professors provided allows me to approach classes with confidence.
What was the transition like going from a diploma to a degree? What are some of the differences?
I believe that having both a diploma and a degree will make me more adaptable in my future career. Seneca taught me a lot of practical knowledge, like how to use advanced functions in Microsoft Excel. This enables me to be more efficient when it comes to accounting problems. My courses at York University build on my learnings from Seneca and provide me with an even deeper understanding of the material.
Advice
What advice would you have for someone who is considering pursuing a degree?
The advice that I would mention to them would be to know your limits. I would recommend limiting to 4 or 5 courses per semester. This would give you time to study, and also attend student assistance programs your secondary institute might have to offer. This will lead to better grades overall.
Any tips for current students or professionals on how to balance work, school and life?
Two important tips that go hand-in-hand: get rest, and do not wait until the last minute to study. I find that if you study a little bit every day, once you reach the final test or exam, all you’ll need is a small review session. With this method, I was able to go to sleep at an appropriate time without feeling unprepared before important exams.
Current Life
What are you up to now (life, work and school)?
I am currently a full-time student at York University pursuing my Bachelor of Commerce in Accounting. I’ve finished my first semester and am moving on to my second semester.
What are your plans for the future (short-term and long-term)?
My short-term goal is to finish my bachelor’s degree in two years. After that, I want to start working towards my CPA designation. Within two or three years of working, I wish to open a firm with friends that I met at Seneca.
