Subject Title
Advanced Drone Flight Training and Review

Subject Description
Students build on their knowledge from the Drone Ground School course by examining the Canadian airspace to complete basic flight maneuvers including landing techniques and instrumentation training. Students operate a multi-rotor Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) drone while complying with the Canadian Aviation Regulations to complete their flight review to receive their Transport Canada small Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems (RPAS) Advanced Pilot Certificate.  In addition, students learn about RPAS industry applications and up-to-date technologies that support future flight operations.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

  1. Explain flight controls and instrumentation for a drone flight controller to support flight operations.
  2. Use flight controls to navigate a drone while in-flight.
  3. Describe drone emergency procedures including accident and incident reporting to support flight operations.
  4. Conduct site surveys and pre-flight check prior to flight operations to encourage a success compliant flight.
  5. Operate a multi-rotor Vertical Take-off and Landing (VTOL) drone while complying with the Canadian Aviation Regulations.
  6. Identify distances and obstacles for collision avoidance to support a safe and successful flights.
  7. Apply essential pilot skills, including decision-making, situation awareness, communication and workload management to manage successful flight operations.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.
