Subject Title
Designing Kitchens and Bathrooms

Subject Description
This course focuses on the details required to plan and design kitchens and bathrooms for today's homes. The history of these two rooms will be reviewed and how they have changed in importance in our homes. Learn the basics of cabinet styles, lighting requirements, appliances, and current trends in kitchen and bathroom design. Learning about minimum space requirements, counter and backsplash options, and work triangles will enable students to achieve a practical and functional application to planning these important rooms.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this subject the student will be able to:

Successful completion of this course will enable the students to:

  1. Identify space requirements for both kitchen and bathrooms for traffic patterns, safety, and function
  2. Assign work triangles and appropriate appliances and fixtures' positions in kitchen and bathroom plans
  3. Illustrate kitchen and bathroom designs using CAD or hand drawing floor plans in 1/2" scale
  4. Interpret lighting needs, counter surfaces and back splashs or tile tub/shower options, for both kitchen and bathrooms
  5. Define basic cabinet styles and trends for both kitchen and bathroom use
  6. Create a final kitchen / bathroom design project to be included in professional portfolio.

Camera Use and Recordings - Synchronous (Live) Classes
Synchronous (live) classes may be delivered in person, in a Flexible Learning space, or online through a Seneca web conferencing platform such as MS Teams or Zoom. Flexible Learning spaces are equipped with cameras, microphones, monitors and speakers that capture and stream instructor and student interactions, providing an in-person experience for students choosing to study online.

Students joining a live class online may be required to have a working camera in order to participate, or for certain activities (e.g. group work, assessments), and high-speed broadband access (e.g. Cable, DSL) is highly recommended. In the event students encounter circumstances that impact their ability to join the platform with their camera on, they should reach out to the professor to discuss. Live classes may be recorded and made available to students to support access to course content and promote student learning and success.

*Form board or students may use Computer-Aided Drafting (CAD) softeare (e.g. AutoCAD, Rivet) if you have previous course experience with the software.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Students are encouraged to explore digital mediums to create their portfolio pieces. However, this course will not cover the 'how-to' or troubleshoot any of the aforementioned software. All digital submissions of drawings should be submitted as a PDF file.

To be successful in this course, you must complete all course work as specified and achieve an overall grade of 55% or higher. 

Grading is based on the following marking scheme:

Midterm Exam 15%

Individual Projects 40%
Final Test 10%

Midterm Examination is in an online format with no supervision requirement.
