Develop and strengthen your writing skills through Seneca's ESL Writing courses. These courses focus on developing academic writing skills. There are four levels, from basic to advanced. The first two levels focus on building a solid foundation of grammar and refining paragraph writing skills. Level three and four focus on the academic essay and the expression of critical thinking skills.
Get started by registering for an English Assessment (ELL100) to ensure correct level placement.
Seneca's ESL Pathways recognize achievements with proficiency Microcredentials (Recognition of Achievements). Successful completion of ESL934 allows students to enrol in Communicating Across Contexts (COM101) or Communicating Across Contexts Enriched (COM111).
Students are required to complete an assessment for the ESL courses listed in this package. There is a non-refundable/non-transferable assessment fee of $45.00. The assessment identifies the appropriate course and level of study.

This course covers the grammar and mechanics of compound and complex sentence structures enabling students to develop the skills needed to communicate their ideas in clearly written and well organized paragraphs. Students also learn to identify main ideas of simple articles and readings through summarizing and paraphrasing activities.

EAP130 is an intermediate reading and writing skills subject. This course is for students who can write a short, unstructured piece of writing demonstrating some knowledge of basic grammar structures. The course focuses on the writing process, rhetorical organization, content, structure, style and vocabulary in the context of advanced paragraph writing. The grammar focus is on demonstrating mastery of intermediate grammar structures in writing. The reading strategies focus on understanding inferences and distinguishing between fact and opinion.

This course is a continuation of EAP130. It focuses on refining the essay by developing awareness of audience and the use of appropriate registers. The course also focuses on reading strategies and comprehension. In addition, this course also introduces the students to the research essay. Students are expected to be familiar with advanced grammar structures in order to edit for grammatical accuracy at this level.

In this course, students will review and refine the structure of an academic essay. Fundamental writing skills and strategies will be taught and practiced through reading and writing activities that foster critical thinking, vocabulary building and the expression of ideas in an effective and concise manner.
Please note: Successful completion of ESL934 provides direct entry to COM101, Seneca's core communications course for certificate and diploma programs. ESL934 is also generally accepted to a Grade 12 equivalent for entry purposes into programs at Seneca Polytechnic.

In this course, students develop proficient editing skills that enable them to identify grammatical weaknesses in their own writing. Through a focus on error analysis and guided practice, students will learn to become independent self-editors and be able to apply the strategies acquired beyond the duration of this course.

English as a Second Language courses are offered in Classroom format.
The classroom format offers the student an interactive classroom experience, the discipline of a regular weekly or bi-weekly meeting, and a regular schedule of assignments.
