Immigration Case Management (ICM)

This course encompasses an overview of the evolution of the immigration system in Canada from its historical origins to the present, within the context of the broader Canadian legal framework. Students will examine the history of immigration, and sources of law.

This course deals with applications that lead to temporary entry. Students will examine eligibility requirements for foreign nationals under the visitor, student and worker temporary resident programs. Eligibility requirements for Canadian employers, including Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIAs) will be examined.

This course focuses on methods to coordinate and support a legal practitioners caseload. Students will learn to identify variations in case file type and complexity and assess implications for the management of client files and to coordinate, as needed, with the IRCC and the IRB. Students will also apply case/project management techniques to help effect plans, controls, and decisions to identify emerging issues and potential resources needed to address them.

This course explores various theoretical perspectives that explore the social and organizational processes that lead to ethical dilemmas, corruption, systemic discrimination, and other forms of morally questionable behaviours that may arise in the provision of immigration services. Students will also use the rules-based approach to ethics to examines ethics, concepts and issues related to the professional conduct requirements of a legal practitioner. Legislation governing freedom of information and protection of privacy will also be addressed.

This course provides a comprehensive overview of current human resources management (HRM) practices. This course will introduce the diverse components of human resource (HR) functions and their role in the legal office environment. The course will also explore employment-recruitment services used by Canadian immigration firms to assist or advise a client-employer with respect to hiring a foreign national. Case study analysis will be used to link key employment-related statutes that apply to the practical situations that occur in the employment relationship.

This course focuses on applications that lead to permanent residency and Canadian citizenship. Students will examine permanent resident programs (family class and economic classes) and the related eligibility requirements and application procedures. The requirements for applications to grant citizenship, renouncing and revoking citizenship will also be explored. This content provides students with the ability to maintain currency with the regulatory requirements when supporting the permanent residence application process, working with forms and supporting documentation, and managing processing timelines.

This course focuses on writing mechanics and skills to produce and format a variety of documents and forms typically used in the immigration and refugee practice. Students use a range of writing tools and technologies to manage, organize, and control the flow of information generally used in a legal office. Students are provided with the opportunity to develop proficiency in speed and accuracy in keyboarding skills to produce error-free legal correspondence and documents.

This course focuses on the legal barriers to Canadian immigration and related immigration enforcement procedures. Students will examine the enumerated grounds of inadmissibility in the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act (IRPA) and the decision-making roles of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC), Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA), and the Immigration and Refugee Board (IRB).

This course focuses on the management of the legal office. Students will learn through office simulation to manage, organize, and control the flow of paperwork to support the operations of the legal office. Students will also learn about the obligations of the legal practitioner to keep records combined with practical applications relating to trust accounts.

This course examines the tenets of administrative law including statutes, rules, and the parameters of powers that govern the operations of public decision-makers, with a focus on immigration and refugee decision-makers. Students will examine case law, the rules of natural justice, and the tribunal rules of process that govern the divisions of the Immigration and Refugee Board. The content provides students with the skills to locate, read, cite, and apply the rules of procedure to meet timelines and standards to manage a case file and support the legal practitioner.

This course provides the foundational knowledge of international legal instruments that function as the basis for the Canadian refugee protection system. Students will examine the programs and processes related to Canadian refugee sponsorship and in-Canada asylum claims as pathways to permanent residence. Students will also examine the provisions of humanitarian and compassionate considerations class. The content provides students with the skills to conduct research typically used to support a refugee claim, to locate the appropriate legal sources, including the rules of procedure to meet timelines and standards to manage a case file and support the legal practitioner.

This course focuses on legal research and techniques of good legal writing. Students learn about primary sources of law, including how to find and update legislation and case law using both print and online sources. Emphasis is placed on immigration, refugee and citizenship laws. The content provides students with legal research skills to locate, read, cite, interpret, and apply statutes, regulations, and cases in the preparation of legal documents to support the legal practitioner.

This course focuses on enhancing a student?s self-awareness as a communicator for the purpose of building rapport with clients from diverse experiences, beliefs, and customs. Students will develop interviewing skills to communicate with vulnerable clients and engage in the practice of the 5- stage interviewing model and basic Micro-skills through skill-based activities and role-play scenarios.

This course examines the academic theory of dispute resolution methods and the methods and skills that a mediator brings to the process. Students will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in simulated situations, in which they will develop negotiation and mediation skills using an interest-based approach. The content provides students with strategies to manage staff, clients, and stakeholder interactions.

This course prepares students with the knowledge and transferable skills required to support a successful career launch in the Canadian immigration sector. The content provides students the opportunity to reflect on the personal skills and qualities essential to obtain a position in a students chosen career. Students will apply their business communication skills to create a career portfolio and professional social media strategy to transition into the workforce.
