Visual Content Creation (VCC)

This 4 hour foundational course will give students an introduction and vocabulary necessary for their field of study. Students will be introduced to the range of still image capture devices available. Through lectures and assignment work, students will gain a practical awareness of file formats, the relationship between exposure controls and creative controls as well as equipment choice considerations.

This 4 hour foundational course will introduce students to the range of motion image capture and sound capture devices available. They will gain a practical awareness of file formats as they pertain to motion and sound capture. Students will explore appropriate equipment choice considerations.

This course introduces students to formal and observational creative processes that enable the foundation for constructive ideation. An overview of techniques like design thinking, mind mapping, sketching and journaling lead to methods in divergent creative processes that students will then apply to the subject of their projects. Flexibility and agility-based practices will enable students to work as content creators leveraging a wide palette of skills.

This course focuses on the reading of society through the eyes of the image maker. In addition to content on the history of visual culture, the course includes how it has evolved according to technology and social trends, how visual culture has had an effect on social and political trends. Students will complete the course with a foundation of trend spotting in order to connect todays cultural forces with tomorrows.

Building on skills learned in first semester video capture lab, this course will introduce students to a variety of sound recording techniques. Students will work with a variety of sound recording equipment, they will learn how they differ from each other and what considerations play into the best choice of recording tools and techniques.

Building on camera skills learned in first semester, this course will introduce students to a variety of lighting techniques. Students will learn to work with continuous light sources and strobe lighting. Through demos and assignment work, students will learn to discern and employ appropriate lighting tools and techniques to solve the problem at hand.

This course will prepare students to establish and operate a successful visual arts business. Topics include setting up a new incorporated business, types of businesses, government registrations, accounting basics, financial & tax planning, and basic contracts.

With the aim of producing professional quality still and video files that effectively communicate the content creators intent, this intermediate level course will concentrate on software tools and techniques for video and still image editing, manipulation and colour correction using industry standard software. Students will complete in-class labs and assignment work to build and improve upon their skills.

This course provides students with a broad overview of new capturing and display technologies that enhance visual content production. Student will explore platforms like extended reality, drones, projection mapping, advanced resolution displays, portal sportscams, and others. Students will apply a range of such emerging technologies as it relates to the their proposed capstone projects, and will determine strategies for implementing at least one.

This course provides a foundation for students to expand the reach and impact of their content through effective distribution and promotion of their work across multiple platforms. Students will learn how to identify the best platforms for their content, and craft an appropriate cross-platform strategy. Topics will include: different platforms available for visual content (e.g. social media, video sites, blogs, etc.), approaches to multi-platform content strategy, tactics such as cross-promotion, paid advertising, and influencer outreach; and measurements for success.

This course kicks off the program final capstone project. Students will leverage work completed to date to produce a workflow plan, identify resources, develop an equipment list, identify other required team members, exhibition strategies, searching possible site locations, and production scheduling for their final project.

In this 7 week advanced skills training course, students will build on skills learned in their VCC201 class. Students will learn how to scout locations and how to work with a variety mixed light sources in studio and on location.

In this 7 week advanced skills training course, students will learn advanced digital imaging techniques including the use if artificial intelligence tools to enhance their work.

This course enables student to explore the creative process of building a unique business brand for competitive advantage. Topics include use of original intellectual property, Internet marketing, social media, online portfolios, building an audience, business communications, promotional tools, responding to calls for proposals, and presenting to new clients.

In this course students will meet as a group to discuss progress and challenges with their capstone project in the presence of faculty mentors specific to their projects. It will be an opportunity for students to share successes, failures and ideas. Activities include progress reporting, presentation skills and group problem solving.

This course focuses the students attention on the hands-on production needed for their capstone project completion. Students will work with their faculty mentors to receive feedback as they work through their productions for the capstone project.

As students progress towards the completion of their capstone projects, they are required to prepare a public exhibition and supporting documentation for their work. In this course, students continue to develop the necessary skills for the execution of these project components. Students will complete the term being able to speak about the critical, cultural, entrepreneurial, artistic and technical aspects of their project. Students will have the opportunity to rehearse presentations as the work progresses.

This 3 hour foundational course will introduce students to concepts of image manipulation and video editing including editing vocabulary, equipment requirements and workflow to prepare them for more advanced techniques in coming semesters. Through a series of guest lectures, students will hear from a variety of professionals working within the industry. The goal of this course is to provide students with an understanding of what visual content creators do, methods of production and a variety of different income stream models.
