Coronary Care Nursing (COR)

This subject is designed to introduce and assist the Registered Nurse to develop knowledge and skills in the care of cardiac patients and their families. The focus is on patients with atherosclerotic heart disease, myocardial infarction and congestive heart failure, including diagnosis of these dysfunctions. The course also introduces students to basic cardiac dysrhythmias interpretations and the appropriate interventions. Current literature and medical research are incorporated to assure evidence based practice for students working in a cardiology environment. The students have the opportunity to apply their new knowledge to application exercises and case study analysis.

This 63 hour course is designed to build on the learners knowledge of ischemic heart disease and expand their skill of basic rhythm strip and arrhythmia interpretation. The focus will be on 12 and 15 lead ECG interpretation and arrhythmia analysis. This knowledge will be applied to the various degrees and stages of heart disease and other cardiac abnormalities. The content is delivered using interactive teaching modalities, including practice exercises and case study format. This delivery format enhances the learners ability to transfer their theoretical knowledge to clinical practice. Current literature and medical research will be incorporated to assure evidence based practice for students working in or planning to work in a cardiology environment.
