For programs with an optional co-op or programs with an optional work term, students meeting all academic requirements who select the Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) stream of the program will have the opportunity to participate in a co-op or work term in a formal work environment.

Eligibility Requirements for Work-Integrated Learning
To remain in the Work-Integrated Learning (WIL) stream of a program, students must meet and maintain the eligibility requirements and successfully complete the relevant work term course prerequisites. Search for a program below to learn more about eligibility requirements for work-integrated learning.
Please note: Students participating in the WIL stream are required to enrol in the WIL preparation course, WTP 100, and pay the applicable WIL fees, regardless of success in securing a work position. For more information, please see FAQs.
The co-op or work term job search is student-driven, and participation in the WIL stream does not guarantee that a work position will be secured. However, students will receive guidance and support through in-class career workshops and one-on-one coaching to help prepare for the co-op or work term.
Deadline to Transfer to the WIL Stream
If you wish to transfer to the WIL stream of your program, you must submit a transfer request the semester before you are eligible to enrol in the WIL preparation course, WTP100 (review the Courses section of your program webpage). Optional WIL Seeking Term Guidelines
To participate in a seeking term (WTP100), students must meet the eligibility requirements for their Optional WIL program, be enrolled in courses, and actively progress in their program according to their academic plan. WTP100 cannot be taken on its own. To determine when to participate in WIL, students should review the Courses section of their program webpage and locate WTP100 in their program plan.
Depending on the program, students may have flexibility on when they complete their co-op or work term, typically between Semesters 3 and 5.
If eligible, students may seek a WIL position up to two times per co-op or work term, depending on their remaining time in the program and provided they continue to meet WIL eligibility requirements.
Frequently Asked Questions
At the end of the academic term before you enroll in WTP100, your WIL Co-ordinator will review your eligibility once final grades are released. They will then contact you to confirm whether you have met the WIL eligibility requirements, are eligible to transfer to the WIL stream of your program and if you can enrol in the WIL Prep Course (WTP100) in your upcoming term of study. You may also request a copy of your advising transcript on Student Home to see the status of your transfer request.
If accepted, you will self-register for WTP100 through Visual Schedule Builder. This will be unavailable until your transfer to your program’s WIL stream goes into effect after final grades for the term are released. Students should enrol in WTP100 in the semester immediately following the last semester to request transfer to the WIL stream. If you have questions or need support, please contact The Service Hub.
A WIL fee will be applied when you enrol in the WIL preparation course, WTP100. Please note additional WIL fees may apply if your WIL program includes multiple work terms. Additional fees are required for those participating in the WIL stream regardless of success in securing a work position. See Fees and Payments for more information.
The work term may be completed in person, online, or in a hybrid format, depending on the hiring organization. For details specific to your program, please review your program requirements or contact your WIL Co-ordinator.
A WIL seeking attempt is an opportunity for you to actively search and apply for co-op or work placements during the seeking term. During a seeking term, students will have access to job postings through Seneca Works and are encouraged to conduct their independent job search. After the 2 seeking attempts (where applicable), if a student is unsuccessful in securing a co-op or work term as planned, they will be removed from the WIL stream of their program.
Note: If you are taking a 2nd WIL seeking attempt and have already completed WTP 100, you do not need to take WTP 100 again.
Most Optional WIL programs permit only one seeking term (WTP100). A second seeking opportunity may be available for students in the following programs, subject to program requirements, remaining time in the program, and continued eligibility: ACFC, BTAC, CHYC, CLPC, CPAC, CTYC, CVTC, ECTC, EETC and EMAC.
As participation in the WIL stream is optional, if you are unable to secure a work position by the deadline, you will be transferred out from the WIL stream of your program so that the work term does not affect your program progression or graduation timeline. If your program offers a second opportunity to seek a WIL position, you may be allowed to request to transfer out of the WIL stream at a later date. Please contact your WIL Co-ordinator to discuss the options available for your program.
If you no longer wish to complete the WIL stream of your program, we encourage you to contact your WIL Co-ordinator to discuss your options and understand any potential impacts on your program. Please review Seneca’s Important Academic dates to determine the last day you can drop the WTP100 course.
