Types of Work-Integrated Learning

A co-op work term is typically a paid position that is similar in length to an academic semester and requires a minimum of 420 hours of work. It is typically completed between two academic semesters. In programs with a mandatory co-op, successful completion of the co-op work term(s) is required for graduation. Students must be in good standing and meet all requirements prior to participating in the work experience.

Programs with Mandatory Co-op

A work term is similar in length to an academic semester and typically involves full-time work hours that may be paid or unpaid. It is typically completed between two academic semesters and requires a minimum of 420 hours of work. In programs with a mandatory work term, successful completion of the work term(s) is required for graduation. Students must be in good standing and meet all requirements prior to participating in the work experience.

Programs with a Mandatory Work Term

Programs with an optional work term stream provide the opportunity to participate in a work term(s) if eligibility requirements are maintained. A work term is similar in length to an academic semester and is typically a full-time position that may be paid or unpaid and requires a minimum of 420 hours of work. Students in a program with an optional work term stream have the flexibility to transfer to the non-work term stream at any time.

Programs with an Optional Work Term

A field placement is a part-time or short-term hands-on experience in a relevant field of study that may be paid or unpaid. Students must meet all requirements prior to participating in the work experience. In programs with a field placement component, the successful completion of a field placement is typically required for graduation.

Programs with Field Placement

A professional practicum or clinical placement allows students to gain work experience under the supervision of an experienced, registered or licensed professional. Hours completed as part of a practicum or clinical placement are typically unpaid. As the work is done in a supervised setting, typically students do not have their own workload/caseload. In these programs, the successful completion of a practicum experience and/or clinical placement is required for graduation.

Programs with Mandatory Professional Practicum or Clinical Placement

An internship offers a discipline-specific, supervised, structured paid or unpaid work experience or practice placement for academic credit. Internships may occur in the middle of an academic program or after all academic coursework has been completed and prior to graduation. Internships can be of any length but are typically longer than a single work term.

Student Supports

Co-op and Work Terms
The job search for a co-op or work term is student-driven, and participation in the co-op or work term stream does not guarantee that a work position will be secured. However, through Seneca Works, you will receive guidance and support through in-class career workshops and one-on-one coaching to help prepare for the work term.

Field Placements, Professional Practicums and Clinical Placements
For most programs with a field placement, professional practicum or clinical placement, students are directly placed with an employer by Seneca. In some cases, the search may be student driven. Seneca Works will provide guidance and support through in-class career workshops and one-on-one coaching to help prepare for the placement.

Fees and Payments
Additional fees are required for co-op and work terms regardless of success in securing a position. For more information, see fee details.
